Turtle Conservation
These days not many people know if east of Gili Trawangan beach have efforts for hatching eggs and raise turtle. And the time they will to turn the turtle to sea. That Zainuddin is Dino’s café own this hatchery effort. He has take care to turtle although Zainuddin just elementary school graduate.

For raise nine Sisik turtle (Eretmochelys Imbricata), he uses simple equipments for to do it that is plastic box washbasin. If they life, these turtle at about eight month they will be released to free sea. On eight month these turtle have twenty five centimeters lengths.

Everyday, Zainuddin must be serve for feeding per turtle is three once fish flesh. This finance he get from café and three bungalows business that his own. Not enough to do it because Zainuddin must be change of sea water on three times. For get sea water between forty to fifty pails, he must walk to the beach about twenty kilometers.

For this job he has joked if his pants dry not yet from first duty he must repeat this work. He must to do it because his water machine pump has broken. Now he builds a pool conservancy by batako material for turtle. He get donation from New Zealand couple (John and Veny) five million rupiahs. The pool will be to feature pump water that connects from sea as length twenty centimeter by pvc.

Zainuddin’s activity knows well by local society. More people sale turtle eggs to him for hatched. Thousand eggs bring people who it come different place. For example on two days ago more than one hundred eggs from Nipah people paid one hundred fifty thousand rupiah. For buy this eggs Zainuddin must be pay by his money self. After that any people bring eighty egg, Zainuddin buy it one hundred thousand rupiah.

Usually, Zainuddin paid many eggs between three or four of one year. If he didn’t much money he suggests the people to go to Ernest at Gili Trawangan. Ernest is having take care turtle hatchery.

For feeding each turtle need three once fish flesh everyday until these babies get one month age. When their turtle get more than one month constantly they need double portion. For the time they can released to be free to sea when they are eight month age. As long as Zainuddin has to let go 672 turtle that he to hatch his self.

Annual, turtle can to lay eggs season at November every date 12 to 15 days. One chance for to lay eggs the turtle can six times up to beach. For this purpose turtle must get location that natural, quiet and free from people aroma or perfume.

Zainuddin who get three children from his wife Saida, knew well by world wide fund for nature (WWF) Bali and Balai Komservasi sumber daya alam (Nature conservation office) West Nusa Tenggara.

Firstly Zainuddin get donation from Yayasan Kehati Jakarta for support his turtle conservation activity at Gili Air. He gets more than ten million rupiah. Zainuddin brave paid one breeding place turtle until three hundred rupiah. That’s price not count how many turtle eggs will get in this place.

Normally, just seventy five thousand rupiah for one breeding place turtle. And twenty five thousand for paid the worker that to keep this turtle eggs. This time so many turtle to lay eggs at Gili Air. But since 2001 to 2003 no one turtle get lay eggs anymore.

When this project finished, many people still bring turtle eggs to Zainuddin for sale. ”I am so pity looks their turtle eggs hunter. Beside Gili Air need special magnet for interest guest coming,” tell Zainuddin.
